Posted - 09/06/2012 : 14:26:53 7th and 8th grade are different from HS. In HS, everything is regulated by GHSA. Those rules don't apply to middle schools. |

Tryouts typically last week January/first week of February. That is all dictated by GHSA.
So when are tryouts? what month?
It MAY vary by school, but according to the calendar, first day coaches can practice (which means have a team assembled together on the field) is Jan. 28. Expect that nearly all schools will have their tryouts begin on that date.
Looks like they moved the calendar from my previous link. New link to calendar below.

It ruined their year and ruined my sons senior year. It was unforgivable in my mind. That's why to this day, I can't see myself going back there to watch another baseball game. That totally stinks because I used to think that I would enjoy that.
I don't think the coach intentionally cheated. I think he was naive and irresponsible and this is something that never should have happened. I brought it up in this context to let parents know one of the rules. 26 games total during HS season, 9th grade, JV and varsity combined. I wasn't bringing it up to complain about what happened and vilify the program publicly. We're past it and looking forward to my son playing in college in the fall. Exciting times are still ahead.
Bball , i too feel badly for the boys and your son of course .
We have friends at Centennial district who had a son experience this disaster last year it was hard on everyone .
They happen to feel it was NOT a mistake , that a very poor example was made of ignoring well known rules in front of impressionable young men , and they wont be involved with the team any longer as result . Apparently there are others who feel same .
What I wonder and can you answer : is that coach still allowed to remain and be the coach again next season ??
My son has played varsity since his freshman year. This coach started his sophomore year, so my son was already an established varsity player when this coach started. I say this because I have known this coach and worked pretty closely with him for three years. As upset as I am about the whole thing, I honestly don't believe that he did this on purpose with the intent of cheating.
There were two kids who were found in violation of the rule. One a freshman and one a sophomore. Neither of them were total studs. Both decent players and at least one of them may windup being a stud, but neither were super studs worth violating the rules for. Word on the street is that it was a disgruntled parent who was upset about play time who reported this violation to opposing coaches anonymously. The coach then turned himself in to GHSA. Like I said, I have known this coach for 3 years and he is basically an honest, likable, Christian guy. I cannot see him doing it on purpose. I can totally see him not keeping track of what was going on and just letting the kids play, totally unaware of how many games they had been playing. I am not excusing him. He should have known the rules and should have kept track of it. He didn't and we paid the price.
I would venture to say that I know this man better than whoever your friend is. My feeling is that it was not done to cheat. Their feeling is that he did it to cheat. Believe who you want. I am not here to convince you of anything. And as far as I know, he is still going to be the baseball coach. Obviously, the AD (whom I also know pretty well) felt that it was a mistake and not intentional and that's why he's still there. I don't know that for a fact, just guessing, but knowing the AD, if he thought it was intentional, the coach would be gone.
IMHO if he stays the AD should be fired too sounds like some cronyism
When and where did we lose our way in setting examples for these young men ?! |

At my son's school you don't work with your travel team from the time tryouts start (late January) until your season (JV or Varsity) is over. So no, travel doesn't interfere with JV or Varsity at his school. :)
I say it that way because at our house, the school team is the goal and the travel teams are the means to the end. Nobody cares about the tournaments we won or went deep in when he was 12, 13, 14, but it computes when people say he plays for his school.
He is enjoying the heck out of this year's summer team, though.
That assumes HS ball is the goal. What if your HS team is not that competitive, but your son really wants to play past HS?
Then depending on your coach's policy, JV/HS may "interfere" with travel if, like at our school, you're not supposed to play/practice with any other teams during the JV/HS season.
I have heard that not all schools prohibit participating with other teams during their season, but don't know if that's actually true or not. |

Yes it was. I almost put that in my post, but decided against it :). I still can't talk to or look the coach in the eye. Something he should have known and kept up with. Kept Centennial out of the playoffs. I think it was an honest mistake on the part of the coach, but it's no excuse. He should have been keeping up with what was going on. I don't think he would have put the team in jeopardy for a freshman and a sophomore. I know the guy and it about killed him that it happened. Doesn't make me feel any better. Ugh!!!
Mr BBall your a gracious guy to take it all so lightly as I think Im reading your a parent or even a kid player who the coach did wrong to.
Maybe Im an outta date old fashioned guy but from I read here and in the local newspapers this is nothing to give your coach a PASS on , he either cheated or didnt do his work that the county taxpayers paid him to do.
Instead how about feel sorry for the kids and the parents who got abused by his choice to not follow the rules
If Im hardcore then answer this : how many schools in GA did this rules violation last year ?
ONE ?

Also keep in mind, the total number of games any player can play is 26 (max allowed for varsity). So if a player plays 18 JV games, they can only play an additional 8 varsity games for a total of 26 games. That's regular season.
BALL : yes that was learned at Centennial where the coach cost the team 6 games ' not knowing the rules '.

Posted - 06/29/2012 : 08:09:31 For 2012-2013, earliest date Baseball can assemble is 1/28, so tryout week will likely begin 1/28 for 99.9% of teams in Georgia. As bballman states, GHSA dictate start/stop dates. They also control how many games may be played, playoff dates, etc..
Prep baseball practices can begin - 1/28/13 Earliest first game - 2/18 Max games JV - 18 Max games Varsity - 26 (regular season) Regular season concludes - 4/27/13 Playoffs - 5/3/13 thru 5/27/13

Posted - 06/27/2012 : 22:50:44 To add a bit to ATLawman's synopsis.
In Cobb, outside of private schools, there are not freshman teams. JV and Varsity. JV season is pretty much as described. There are no playoffs at end of season for JV.
It's up to each school coach/program if playing travel is allowed during the season or not.
Most school programs have a fall and summer program. Volunteers coach during the fall. School coaches coach during the summer. Summer runs the month of June. Again, up to the coach/program as to whether you "have to" play for the fall/summer program or not.
JV is typically Frosh/Soph's. If there's a Jr/Sr on JV, it's typically a case of a kid rehab'ing back from an injury. Most coaches figure that if a kid hasn't made varsity by Jr season, not much to indicate he would as a Sr, so the spots on JV are given to kids with potential to play varsity in future seasons. |
AllStar |
Posted - 06/27/2012 : 22:34:12 I don't think any of the Cobb County schools have Freshman teams.
At my son's school. 18-20 kids on JV and Varsity. JV is all Freshmen and Sophomores, a couple of the top Sophomores and an occasional lights out Freshman on Varsity. A couple of JV kids may get called up to Varsity at the end of the JV season. Don't play much.
Injuries could change the equation. |
ATLawman |
Posted - 06/27/2012 : 20:52:52 The only experience I have had is this: 9th Grade team (if your school has it) plays 12 to 16 games and winds up playing against some J.V. teams because a lot of schools don't have a Freshman team. J.V. is usually reserved for sophomores and a few talented freshmen. Not common to see Juniors or Seniors on J.V. (I've never seen it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen) They will play less than 20 games in most cases. Most of these boys still play travel along the way. Don't live in Cobb, so don't know much about the Cobb schools. |
