Posted - 04/16/2012 : 16:31:10 Saw this morning that Georgia Dizzy Dean State 8U A tourney will be played in Valdosta. Does it really make sense to have a tournament at least 5 hours away from where all the parks are? Anybody else as unhappy as me about this? |

Sharks beat Bulls 16-4 in Game 1 of championship this afternoon to force a winner-take-all Game 2. Bulls won 6-5, rallying with two in the bottom of the fifth in a back-and-forth game. |

Posted - 07/08/2012 : 22:19:05 Saw that the East Cherokee Bulls won State over OP Sharks. Wish they posted the scores of the games. A few surprises in the bracket, but for the most part, looks like the big boys took care of business. Alot of games for those teams that got sent to the loser's bracket. |

We are very disappointed about Valdosta as well because this does prohibit our team from going to World Series. Some parents could go, but not all could do both. Therefore some of our boys suffer because of the Valdosta and MS combo. We are one of the top teams. So it is even more disappointing that DD took that away from our kids. Oh well...guess that is why so many teams go ahead and go travel! I know that is what my son is doing. At least in travel I know what I'm getting into!
If your son is the thirdbaseman, I thought he won it today walkoff style. If you guys are lookining to change, let me know
Thanks OT. Yes that's my boy :-). Please stop by and introduce yourself. Would love the opportunity to meet you if you are still around the park.

Posted - 07/05/2012 : 12:37:42 I looked at the 8U and 10U state brackets posted online and it looks like games are scheduled from Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, that is only 2 days off work. Yes there is hotel cost incurred, but they can't be as expensive as the metro Atlanta Area. So while I am glad my son's team is heading to a different park (12U B tourny) If teams do State and WS, nobody has to burn 10 vacation days. |

Posted - 07/04/2012 : 11:22:38 I can't believe that you would actually discourage T'ville and say that Valdosta should not be in DD? We were in Canton this week and I agree that it is a very long trip and can get expensive. I also agree that it is not very logical for all the teams to travel to South Georgia... But to say that these kids shouldn't play in DD is somewhat selfish? They should schedule the games to where they will finish in a weekend. The one game per day in most cases didn't make a lot of sense ( maybe early game then late game)? |

Posted - 07/03/2012 : 14:27:51 Hey Vtown- Appreciate the info. I don't think anyone has an issue with Valdosta itself...just the distance for 20 of the 21 teams and families to get there (with DDWS in Miss the next week). I am sure it will be fun once we get there. |

Posted - 07/03/2012 : 12:35:24 We are glad to have y'all in Valdosta! Our 11 and under team played in Rock Springs this weekend in 105 plus heat, at least five hours away. Just remember it is July in the South! The kids had fun and the parents were committed to attend and support the boys. It is not like you have to come to Valdosta every weekend to play ball. It is only for a few days and we welcome you to town. Check out Wild Adventures Theme Park, it is owned by the same folks that own Dollywood and Silver Dollar City and they have a water park and lots of cool rides. VSU has Peach State Summer Theater going on right now and the plays are always great. Believe it or not Lowndes County has over 110,000 people and we are a very diverse communuity with Moody Air Force Base and Valdosta State bringing in people from all over the country. Sit back, relax, enjoy the slower pace and cheer your boys on. We are glad you are here! |

Posted - 07/01/2012 : 22:24:01 I think Valdosta should pull out of DD. I know Thomasville was considering going to DD but this should be an eye opener. I forwarded this link to the Thomas County Recreation authority on Friday and told them they may want to reconsider. As to what Recreation association that most South GA teams participate in, I would say it's GRPA. |

Posted - 07/01/2012 : 15:40:41 OldeTymer- VERY well said. You mention a "big show"...as I mentioned in an earlier post, there might as well be a news blackout...I was unable to find a SINGLE mention of the DD 8u states on any local Valdosta websites, including that of the host organization. If i missed it, feel free to send a link.
By the way, I wonder if the Valdosta team will be represented at the draw tonight in Canton. Will be very interesting to see which qualifying parks will refuse to make the trip.

While everyone vents about the Valdosta Tournament, please be aware that they (Valdosta All-Stars) were checked in just like all of the other DD Teams. Everyone should be happy to check out a new facility, the boys will love seeing a new park, and playing in a new park! Valdosta has a lot to offer, so please go there open-minded and have a great time. The kids feel the vibe off of their parents/ coaches, and if you are already complaining then there is a good chance the boys will not have a good experience!!! When signing up for AllStars, you should take into consideration that not every tournament will be local...please remember that you are really out there to support the boys and their love of the game. Remember the Valdosta heat and the Frog Toggs!!
I dont think anyone playing allstars expects every tournament to be local but I dont think everyone with the "shut up and take it" mentality really understands the main issue. Each year, everyone expects to travel about an hour or two for state and take vacation for the World Series. In the past, you can go to work and leave a little early and still make state. Then, you plan to take a week of vacation for the WS. No one expects, especially in this economy, to wipe out an entire year's worth of vacation days (2 weeks) over a three week span. Thats the rub.
Valdosta chose to be the only DD park within a 4 hour drive so their folks really cant complain. If I move out on a farm 4 hours away from the local grocery store, I cont complain when it takes me 4 hours to get there. But, if me and my 15 - 20 neighbors are surrounded by grocery stores convenient to us all but we are told we have to go to the one 4 hours away, I have every right to complain a little. The baseball and the groceries are going to be the same regardless of where they are coming from. Unless you want to argue that Valdosta will be more fun for the kids than the WS, there is no logical argument to be made as to why anyone would ask recreational baseball families to travel 2 out of three weeks.
If state were in Valdosta and the WS at the new Dream Park coming to Cartersville, none of the north GA folks would be complaining. Ironically, the largest portion of the DD organization is from NW GA and this choice has angered a number of parks. Face it, this is a play for more money by DD which is why it was a bid and you are hearing rumors on non-qualifying teams getting invited to state "a". They need a big show to gobble up and convert a number of the small rural organizations around Valdosta and they will figure out the logistics later. |

What is there to do in Valdosta for the kids?
Wild Adventures Park, there are also many little things around the city. This is what I have heard from some of the teams from there. |

Posted - 06/29/2012 : 22:30:01 I was told by a DD Official that the May 15th rule has been removed because it was "not enforceable." I am not sure what the current rule is, but it is very apparent that some teams are true rec all star teams while some are formed during the winter and practice/play together all spring. In my humble opinion, DD needs to come up with a ruling because some parks (u know who you are) are basically travel teams disguised as all stars. There needs to be a standard in order to keep a level playing field. |

Chad u probably are correct about the usssa team - that makes sense. I believe they can play usssa tourneys as long as the team name is different?? (as it is) and the roster differs by a player or two (as it probably does).
They can play USSSA with the same name and players so long as none of the USSSA touranemtns cause the players to miss a rec game.
What about the rule (section 11:13) which prevents any team from holding a practice prior to May 15. Wouldn't playing that group of players in USSSA during the entire rec season violate that rule? |

Coach Pete - I do not belive that is why Georgia Force was let go from DD. I heard otherwise from a DD Official. However, maybe we should print that roster and compare to their DD All Star Team just in case...LOL
If there are other teams invited that did not qualify, then why even have district??? Will be interesting to see what happens. I hope Relief was just misinformed for everyone's sake.
From what I heard, Force was dq'd because of a technicality. Paulding Co is it's own organization with all the parks under this umbrella. One park decided to do their own thing and with half of the Force's roster coming out of that park, they couldn't play together anymore because their roster would have been from two different parks.

"Dizzy Dean Baseball, Inc. is a non-profit youth Baseball/Softball organization whose mission is to provide a recreation outlet for as many youth as possible."
MANY teams that qualified for 8u "A" State will not be attending due to the location...does that jive with DD's stated mission? Of course not. And now teams that did not qualify based on results at district have been invited....watering down the competition. Is it a true "State Championship" when some of the best teams won't be participating? Good luck to those who return to DD...they obviously do not have the best interests of the kids in their decision making process.
If DD is trying to make gains in S. GA, what associations do the South GA recs use now? |
