It's a bit odd. They have 6 teams in Pools A & B, and 5 teams in Pools C & D, yet they have one of the Pool A teams (North FL Hurricanes) playing both their pool game in Pool D, and one of the Pool B teams (Suwanee Road Dogs 9U) playing both their pool games in Pool C. Would appear that those two teams should be in Pools C & D and not A & B. So it's either a typo on Tak's part or something weird. |

Posted - 02/22/2012 : 13:51:26 @ in the know, check out the florida super nit in the 9 major for this weekend. look at pool standings compared to pools and then look at bracket after pool. something seems incorrect. there are only 5 teams in pool A and B, however in pool A/B standings there are 6teams. i'm confused, maybe you can help me out. |

Posted - 02/22/2012 : 12:55:30 Our team doesn't get caught up in USSSA's points and ranking system. We search out the best competition to challenge our boys. We then gauge our developement and growth based on our head -to-head results against the best teams. This year we will play more USSSA because they are hosting some attractive tourneys. We might end up with some points but at the end of the day they can classify us whatever they want. |

Posted - 02/22/2012 : 11:57:35 Not necessarily so. The points should "stripe" the pools.
Assume that you have 16 teams in 4 pools. Teams are ranked 1 thru 16. You wouldn't put seed 1 in a pool with seeds 14, 15, & 16.
Instead, Seeds 1,2,3,4 are all the on seeds in their respective pools. Then stripe backwards seeds 5,6,7,8, then stripe forward again, seeds 9,10,11,12, then backward again, 12,14,15,16. So you pools would look like
Pool 1 Seed 1, Seed 8, Seed 9, Seed 16
Pool 2 Seed 2, Seed 7, Seed 10, Seed 15
Pool 3 Seed 3, Seed 6, Seed 11, Seed 14
Pool 4 Seed 4, Seed 5, Seed 12, Seed 13
I have also seen where, after the first pass, they reverse stripe every subsequent round so that you end up with:
Pool 1 Seed 1, Seed 8, Seed 12, Seed 16
Pool 2 Seed 2, Seed 7, Seed 11, Seed 15
Pool 3 Seed 3, Seed 6, Seed 10, Seed 14
Pool 4 Seed 4, Seed 5, Seed 9, Seed 13
I actually think that the first method provides more fair and balanced pools, but not too different
That's how they SHOULD use the points. Not how they necessarily do in practice.
What you describe below is completely wrong.
Also, points are used as the 5th tie-break for seeding brackets after pool play

Given the fact that we are discussing points earned in U-trip and how these points earned are supposed to be utilized by tourney directors when scheduling pool play games.
I know this discussion has been placed on this board before. Am I mistaken, but when it comes to u-trip, the team with the most points going in to said tournament are supposed to play the teams with the least amount of points? I see a tournament for a coming weekend, in an 8 team tourney where the top 4 teams based on points are put in one pool and the 4 bottom points teams are in another pool....is this common practice with USSSA?

Knowing that USSA's point system can benefit a team that plays a lot of their tournaments, well, we play a lot of their tournaments. We played several U-Trip's in the Fall which built up a nice log of points going in and will likely play about 2/3rds of our Spring/Summer season with them.
Obviously they designed this system to encourage teams to stick with them and in my team's case we took the bait. We even put it in our info packet given out at try-outs that USSSA would be one of our priorities for tournament selection.
That said, it doesn't always work. There are plenty of great teams that don't focus on USSSA and therefore don't seed high in the pools when they play U-Trip. Unless there are enough teams playing up in class in any given tourney, being near the top of the pool seeding isn't necessarily any advantage. Regardless of that, I do love USSSA's website. It's great to be able to pull up records, look at past match-ups and see how your team stacks up against the competition. |

No...runs allowed is the tie breaker. |

Power rating has nothing to do with points. |
