Are there any 23/4 good bats out there that meet the USSSA rules? What are the going prices?

Great responses, thanks. The help is appreciated.
Right now I have the team swinging wood during winter workouts but back to aluminum for the games. It makes a difference in bat speed and focus. Also in aggressiveness at the plate.
I like the point about being at a disadvantage to others, and thus the team as a whole, if he's swinging -3 while others are at a -5.

I have also been struggling with what bat to get my son. A drop 3 or drop 5. This fall, he used wood for 90% of his at bats. But I do think he may have gotten just a bit more pop on a few hits if he had been using a drop 5. I guess it is time to start swinging and see what he likes.

I agree. We're playing 14u this year and taking the same approach, though some players don't seem to want to listen. Not sure if the difference is the rating system so much as the weight difference, but either way it makes sense to use -5 BPF 1.15 while we're allowed to.

A lot of these guys were swinging -8 or -9 at 12 & 13u. Making the jump straight into -3 in game situations doesn't seem to me the best way to make the transition. There will be time at 15u when they're bigger, stronger and everyone is BBCOR mandated.

At the very least pick between -3 and -5 according to the pitching being faced (we bought several team bats so everyone has access to a -5).

I would say it depends. Crushing the ball off machine, soft toss and BP is far different from facing live pitching, so take that into consideration. The other thing will be what the bat reg's are when you hit 13u. For this year 13u, I would recommend AGAINST using -3 in games because the only way to do so would be to use BBCOR, which would put him at a disadvantage to players swinging a 1.15. I would recommend that, for the kids big enough, to swing -3 in practice but use a -5 in games. Perhaps if you're facing a weaker team or pitcher and you can afford to give up the pop, then use a -3 on those occasions, but otherwise a player this year opting to swing the BBCOR will definitely be at a disadvantage, potentially hurting the TEAM (I could care less about individual stats).

As for next season (2012-2013), I would see what bats are available. Will some manufacturers work to meet the need by making a 1.15 -3 bat? Will the 1.15 rating change? Hard to tell, but if all remains equal, then my recommendation would be the same for this season. Get as many reps as you can with a -3, but swing a -5 come game time so that you don't adversely affect the team. Maybe an extra inch/ounce on the -5 than the -3.

I have an old 11U, turns 12 seven days past the cutoff date, and I just moved him to a -5 from a -8. He's crushing the ball so far.
My plan was to stay at -5 for his 11U and 12U seasons and then to a -3 starting his 13U year. Any thoughts?

Depends on where you play. -3 BBCOR is required in some leagues ie GGBL for 14U. Tourneys allow -5 and -3 if they are made BBCOR or 1.15. My opinion is that a 14 year old needs to be swinging a -3 and getting used to it if he wants to play in HS.
