Son is on an 11U team. I know planning for Cooperstown takes alot of time and effort but I keep hearing that you need a certificate to play in the Cooperstown tournament. Big question is, how do you obtain a certificate to play? The team he is on is not associated with any park and I guess you would consider them independant. If you are not a member of a park does this exclude you from going to Cooperstown? Was also told that you can buy certificates. If this is true, where do you locate these and how much are they? If we can somehow obtain a certificate what are the costs associated with playing (how much $ does a team need to raise?). When do you need to sign up for the tourny? I have heard months in advance.

Any advice on how we can get to Cooperstown from those that have gone, and were not associated with a park or did not have a certificate would be greatly appreciated. Thanks is advance

For my team last season we started our registration process in Sept. 2010 and by early Dec. we had been sent a confirmation of attendance, meaning we were in. We ultimately got assigned to the very 1st week of the tourney in June 2011. It is expensive, if I am not mistaken we had to have right about $5,000 paid prior to January and the remainder by March 2011. Start fundraising early if you plan to go.

We are independent, and I submitted our entry for 2012 in June 2011, and we got in. I think if you do it a year in advance, you should be fine.

You don't need a certificate. The certificate just guarantees you will get a week assignment. Without a certificate, you submit your application and may or may not get a week assignment.

You can try and get a certificate from a team that went last year but isn't returning. The certificates tend to be more for specific parks that send teams year after year. Many of the rec parks "own" the certificate and use it to grandfather the next seasons team. Some don't, and you can get a certificate from one of the teams that isn't obligated to turn it over. The certificates are only valid for one year, so teams that received one this past summer, would have had to have sent it in by September of this year with the $1,000 deposit for next season, otherwise it expires. If you want one for 2013, I'd start asking around next summer to find a team going that doesn't have to turn their certificate over. Post on this board. Most coaches are happy to give them to you for nothing if they aren't going again.

You can go to their website now and submit your request for 2012, 2013 or 2014. Link is below.
