I've had it with coaches that cannot control their temper to the point of making physical threats and using obscenities on the field. These people do not deserve the privilege of coaching. We had a coach this weekend threaten physical harm to our coaches and 13 yr old players because they were forced to forfeit a game to a rule violation. He yelled at our kids things I won't repeat here. Tournament and League directors need to stand up and put an end to this bad behavior.

We have encountered this in several tournaments this year so this weekend was not an isolated incident.

13u AAA Tournament this past weekend: A player we have played with before was not on the official roster of the opposing team. His name on the line up card was not his correct last name. After the player comes up to bat it is brought to the attention of the umpire, he throws his hand up and says not my issue. Bring it up with the TD. At that time the Head coach gets on the phone and adds the player to his roster. We filed a protest. Bubba Smith calls both coaches to the office and notes the timestamp that the player was added to the roster(36 minutes after game start time) That's illegal after the tournament has started to add to your roster and the team is forced to forfeit Game 1 of single elimination.

The Assistant Coach begins his ranting at the players and the coaches. We were forced to wait by our dugout until they cleared the parking lot.

Is the boy in question 13?? If so is a protest really the way you want to win?? Let these boys play!! It isn't a 13 year old kids fault he wants to play baseball and loves baseball, and that is exactly who will pay for the protest....The boy won't get to play, the coach will just go find someone else to fill his shoes. Would you have protested if the kid wasn't worth a flip?? Probably not.

Just curious, but what kind of parent lets their son play for a coach such as those that are being mentioned? Are some teams out there just THAT good that you will deal with this?

I would like to find out what everyone thinks about a coaching philosophy that uses insults and ridicule to try and motivate children.
Our current coach calls the boys sissies, crybabies, lazy, selfish, etc as his way to get them to be men and work harder and perform better. Is this what alot of coaches think is an acceptable coaching method? I've told my son to ignore him when he goes into one of his rants, be respectful, but go to a happy place and don't listen to him.
I find it hard to believe that coaches think you can get better performance out of your players by insulting them and embarassing them in front of their teammates.

If this did happen I would let us as parents know which team this was and where the tournament was. I would not let my son play against this team or in a tournament this team is signed up for.
I would like to know what the rule violation was in detail? I am not justifying a coach screaming at anyone just curious.

Tell the TD's if that team is coming, yours isn't. Find some like-minded teams and do it together. I would expect that if 6-7 solid teams in an age group sent that message to a couple of tournaments, word would get around and these teams would either have to straighten up their act, change coaches or go play far away where nobody knows them.

As it is, we are just talking about anonymous offenders and everyone is left to guess who we are talking about.

Same goes for the teams that do other things we complain about: bring in hired guns, yell "balk", hold (and charge for) bogus tryouts, etc...

Shame and ostracism are powerful disinfectants.

I totally agree with you. I am appalled at the behavior I am seeing every tournament. It seems it is an exception to come across a team that behaves with respect and dignity. My son's coaches are amazing but what do we do about other coaches who behave badly? What about parents? Why does anybody think it's OK for a parent to call a kid names and scream at them?

There really should be a zero tolerance policy on all this crazy behavior.

I once saw a guy get removed from an Atlanta Braves game for being belligerent and using foul language. So why is it that people can behave in the same manner at a YOUTH baseball game and be allowed to get away with it?

This is not our coach but opposing coaches. We have had 3 coaches at 3 different tournaments this year from 3 different teams. 1 threatened a player because he thought he was too agressive on 1st, the other 2 wanted the coach to "meet him in the parking lot" because they did not like a call that was made and the arguing began. This shows a major lack of character and is certainly unsportsmanlike.

Believe me if it was our coach he would be held accountable but how do you hold other coaches from other teams accountable? They are crossing the line when they use obscenities or threaten physical violence. And....the umpires are doing nothing about it, which is a whole other topic!!

Anyone that threatens one of Papa's grandchildren will have to deal with Papa long before they ever get to a tournament director.

You as the parents have the best control over this situation . . .take the boys and play elsewhere. I know that's hard to do at this point of the season, but it is better than continually exposing your child to that situation. I agree they should be banned, but the only people able to do that is the organization you are playing for. My son played on a team a few years ago and at the sub state tournament the coach was yelling uncontrollably at the kids and as parents we had enough and chose to be done that day. We didn't even show up for bracket play. We told our kids it's not ok to quit ever, but it is also not acceptable to be treated that way by their coach.

I am in favor of a life long band on any coach who threatens a child.
