Rec Ball
Batter crowding the plate(toes litterally on edge of plate)leaning over plate. Batter gets hit in arm which is in the strike zone. Very little attempt to move. HBP??? |

Happened to my son recently while pitching. Batter ducked down over the plate, and got a strike called on him. |

Ump got it wrong, even after being told the batter was over the plate, but again this is rec ball and made no difference in result.

If its rec ball the umpire should had warn the player and his coach that he leaning over the plate and if he hit by a pitch in the strike zone it would be called a strike and he will not be awarded first base.
I also saw this at a high school game this week. The player got away with it his first at bat but a strike was called his next at bat. |

Strike at every level of the game....prevents a player from attempting to get on base by making contact with his body when he cant do it with his bat :) |

I believe all y'all but how about those kids from Chinese Taipei who put on elbow protectors, lean in and take the pitch AND get awarded first base?? Happened at least 3 times in August 2009 in the LLWS. |

Saw this happen last week in a high school game. Player leaned and turned into a pitch that hit him over the plate. Batter trotted down to 1B. Umpire called him back to the plate, assessed the strike and the AB continued. His coach didn't even argue the point. Kid struck out looking on next pitch. |

No, if the pitch is a strike and the batter is in the strike zone and gets hit then it is a dead ball strike not HBP. |

No. Strike.
From the MLB rulebook the batter is entitled to first base when:
(b) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (1) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (2) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball;
If the ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a strike, whether or not the batter tries to avoid the ball. If the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall be called a ball if he makes no attempt to avoid being touched.

Pitch is a strike. can't be a free base if hit by a strike.
Most umps don't call it though! |

If in the umpires judgement a pitch that would have been called a strike makes contact with the batter, the umpire would call dead ball then indicate a strike. no base awarded for this. If this were to happen on strike three, then no dropped third strike can occur and no other runners can advance on dead ball. |
