Posted - 02/20/2011 : 22:31:09 So there is a team I know that decided having captains was a good idea. Ok, maybe one or two would not be bad. Unfortunately they have decided to pick 5 kids as captains and have C's sewn on their jerseys. Now that is 1/3 of the team. What good is designating captains on a baseball team? Ok, maybe you could say having one or two that lead stretching exercises, and go up for the coin toss is beneficial, but 5? So what are we saying to the other players on the team? I always believe that the team leaders will naturally fall into place and by designating them, without them truly being the leaders on the team, can do more harm to the team chemistry than not having them at all.
Before anyone suggest I have sour grapes, I don't even have a kid within 2 years of this age group. I just question some things that I think are counter productive.
I bring it up because I am curious of other's opinions about this situation. |

Posted - 02/22/2011 : 14:46:50 Strangely this is not a predominately dad coached team. They have one coach that is a paid dad coach (goes to my previous "Conflict of Interest" opinion we talked about in great detail this time last year) who's son was one of the 5, I believe.
I guess that is the perplexing thing having paid coaches making this arrangement.
The conflict soon becomes "Well you need your captains on the field most of the time. It does not make sense having a captain sitting the bench." |

Posted - 02/22/2011 : 08:48:09 My honest opinion-No need for team captains in baseball. A team captain can step up and be different in every game. Obviously all the coaches kids have the C on their shirt. agreed with what you said ("I always believe that the team leaders will naturally fall into place and by designating them, without them truly being the leaders on the team, can do more harm to the team chemistry than not having them at all.") |
