Can anyone tell me what a composite wood bat is? I know the bamboo bats are pieces of bamboo put together to form a bat. What is a composite wood bat?

Here is a link to a Bat Guide published by Baseball America. It gives some history, explains how they do the testing, etc. As far as I can determine I have not violated any rules by posting the link. It was in an email I received with an email to a friend link and it was a rotating banner on their home page.

How they determined the BBCOR rating was to take all wood bat models (including composites) and tested the bat and ball "bounciness" on impact. Once they determined the highest "bounciness" for all the wood bats, they made the new limit slightly higher than that so all wood bats would be covered. This is why you hear people say "The new bats will only be slightly better than using wood." Because the rating limit is just slightly better than what you get with wood.

Here is the explanation:

According to their own explanations of the new standard, both the NCAA and NFHS want all bats to have the same performance factors as the best wood bats. While it may still be cost effective to purchase aluminum or composite bats that will last longer than wood bats, it won’t necessarily make you a better batter. You’ll have to swing faster and more accurately to get the same hits as before.

Yes, composite wood bats are legal to use in games. My son owns a Mizuno wood composite bat that is stamped "BESR Certified." These bats will cost you more, however they will last longer.

The Baum Bat is legal up through low A ball already so I sure would think so. Plus I think we are composite wood bats we are talking about here not the composit "metal" bats.

question is are these composite bats legal for high school when the bat rules change next year?

If you are looking to get one I highly recommend the Baum Bat! Google Baum Bat and you can order them off their site.

A composite bat is made of a blend of woods and inner supports rather than from a solid piece of wood. Google is your friend. Don't be afraid of it.

Composite wooden bats are comprised of different wood blends and inner supports, not carved from a solid wood billet. This means that composite wood bats are more durable and last longer than traditional wood bats.

They typically are coated with a composite material to help hold the wood together. Apparently the composite material does not increase performance but does help with durability.

Unlike a traditional wood bat, which is typically carved from a single piece of maple, ash or other wood, composite wood bats are constructed of a blend of different types of wood, and can include other materials as well (e.g. Brett Bros makes a bat that is bamboo, maple, and fiberglass). Composite wood bats tend to be more durable than traditional wood bats.
