Good evening. My son plays 9U and I need to get a new set of catchers gear. Any recommendations? He is playing travel ball, so it will be out through its paces, I would like higher quality gear, and easy to use (to take on and off. I want him putting on the gear and taking it off. It bugs the crap out of me for the kids to just stand there and let the adults do it). Also anyone using a sun block on their helmets?

Do not under estimate the All Star brand. My 3 sons have used it all at travel ball levels (AA, AAA, Major)and they love it. It looks great and it is light weight. Remember all catchers' gear regardless of brand name has to live up to the same protection standards. I am buying my oldest a new set soon and he is comparing the All Star brand to the Louisville TPX brand. Just my $.02. |

With so many equipment manufacturers offering quality youth gear, suggest you go to a local merchant who has the gear in stock so your son can try it on. All other factors being equal, get the gear that fits him best. |

At 9u, if you are going to go with the old style skull cap and mask, you better have a back-up that is the hockey style or the older style that covers the ears. HS rules will not allow the old skull-cap style, so you may play tournaments that use HSBB rules as a base, and umpires that will call you on that one. It does not always happen, but you need to be ready. Especially at the younger ages. At 13 and up, you don't get much flack, but the younger ages might. |

Don't spend the farm on this set. He'll probably only have it for a couple of years. There are several quality brands out there. My son(who is 13)uses the Louisville Pulse Static and couldn't be happier. Easton, and Under Armour also make good gear. Some boys like the hockey style masks and others prefer the old school mask. Just make sure everything in the face area is protected and properly fitting(including throat protectors on the old school stuff). Once you get closer to high school you can plan on spending a lot more. |
