Posted - 09/28/2010 : 09:09:15 What is your opinion on these one day tournaments. Some directors are having 10 - 15 teams and having only 2 teams to a championship game after 2 pool games. In my opinion, you do not get a true champion this way.
Does winning tournaments matter in the fall or just playing more important? |

Posted - 09/29/2010 : 14:12:32 Well, I like the format but there are to many teams to do this and have a true champion. I guess if I am going to pay for trophies and have a chance for a 3rd game, it should be a fair format instead of the luck of the draw of pool games. With 13 teams you could have 5-6 undefeated teams and runs aloud will determine who plays in championship games. Don't get me wrong, I do not care about trophies but these kids like to get them! |

Posted - 09/29/2010 : 00:32:07 I think this falls under the category of you can't please all of the people all of the time. Last year they had these Sunday Shootouts every Sunday and all of the coaches complained (including me) that the games were not long enough to really even get a rhythm going. Most games would last 2 innings. Everyone wanted longer games. So now he puts together this series of longer games but there is not enough time in a day to do the brackets so this is the best option that I have heard of. I, personally, like it because we get longer games. I am not at a Fall Tournament to earn trophies, I am here to see how we are doing in the development of the boys on the new larger fields against teams that I hope are equal to or better than us. More than half of my boys are playing football so I cant play even pool games on Saturday unless I start picking up players and then am I really learning anything about the team I am trying to field for the Spring?
Just my $.02

Posted - 09/28/2010 : 11:53:36 In my opinion, winning tournaments never really matters. What matters most - especially for the pre-HS kids is learning the game and improving skills. It's nice to win, but it really should not be the end all be all.
Couple into that the fact that most teams aren't even playing with their full rosters in the fall and I will emphatically say that playing and honing skills is the most important in the fall. |
