Bryce Harper signs a $9.9 million contract with the Nationals. Wow....

"In the final minutes before Tuesday morning’s deadline, the Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a contract with Bryce Harper, the 17-year-old baseball prodigy they’d made the first overall pick in June.

The contract is worth $9.9 million over five years guaranteed, the largest ever for a drafted position player. It includes a signing bonus of $6.25 million, along with additional bonuses of $500,000 per season if Harper is on the Nationals’ roster in 2014 and 2015. The Nationals also agreed to pay for the rest of Harper’s education."

It started last week when Pap nailed a batter on purpose for the supposed slight of watching a home run ball in the air too long. Pitcher nails batter for slight, yeah it happens, teammate (Harper) goes on the record and says it was a bull move....oh boy, there is going to be trouble there.

After Harper's pop up to left Pap said something along the lines of "Do you think you are too good to run out a pop-fly?"...which is true, Harper doesn't follow through with basic protocol. HOWEVER, Pap made contact and Harper was just saying words, so while I condone the sentiment I can't agree with how the 11 year vet went about explaining to the new kid on the block what is expected in MLB.

so you are a big fan I am guessing? I like his skills, but attitude counts just a little. Maybe when he grows up he can be a HERO to our youth..right now? not so much! I'm rootin for him though. really, I'd like to see kids and their dads look up to him and say they want to be like him.
My kid better never act like this guy does....Why do you think he gets boo'd by Braves fans? Yet Ryan Howard NEVER gets boo'd
Braves fan LOVE Ryan Howard and he Killed us for years!
Somehow I wont be surprised at this rate if something really bad "outside" of baseball happens with your boy......I dont like them, but I'd say the odds are high that he will mess up big time and be a bad mark for his TEAM.......sure some folks will love him no matter what, but lots of Folks love Hillary too.....uuhhhmmm

He's not my boy, but I do like watching him play even though he's on our division rival. Has he ever done ANYTHING for you to say that the odds are high that he will mess up off the field? This is no Johnny Football scenario.

There have been a lot of doubters and probably even more people hoping he would fail. He's done the opposite to date.

And I loved Francoeur when he was here and I'm glad he has bounced back again even though it is for a rival. I wish he would have listened to some hitting coaches along the way. At the end of his tenure here he would come up and I would say to my son, "He's going to swing at Ball 1." As often as not I'd be right. It's too bad because it could have been so much better.

I like Ryan Howard, too.

Do not like Hillary.

Lets just say, he seems to be a weee bit of a Hot Head...........One of the first things he did was disrespected the Braves by sliding his foot over the Logo when heading to the batter's box. I guess Papplebon is a bit of a Hot head too(hes a closer so he has an excuse/pass), but How much fun did you have watching Harper's response?

What did Pap say to him? Why would he say Anything?

Harper seems to have trouble staying healthy during the regular season, but he had a pretty good postseason.

Francoeur is a Minor League Free Agent. He would have been as good as anybody else the Braves had coming off the bench this year. Better defensively. He's got to have something left if there is a hitting coach out there that can get through to him.

Francoeur designated for assignment.

This guy has way more upside than Francoeur ever thought about! He has Francoeur in every single category; Speed, Arm, Power, Average and Fielding.

You forgot a few categories like character, honesty and integrity.
I don't know about Bryce but Jeff is pretty high in all 3 of those.
Braves gave up on him and he sold more seats at Turner than most players. They should have given up on Cox when he brought in Charlie Leibrandt that year that cost them.

Harper is batting .313 w/10 HR's and 21 RBI's

Francoeur is batting .234 w/1 HR and 9 RBI's

Francoeur is a GREAT citizen no doubt. Not sure there's any indication that Harper isn't.

I'd take either on my team.

Agree with you on Francoeur, TOTALLY disagree with you on Bobby. One of the greatest managers of all times. Loved by the players, management and fans. Plus it was awesome watching him get thrown out of games :)

Yea, i don't know how you think he has Frenchy beat in every category...not when he came out....remember he hit like .400 that partial season... I am not saying he won't be good, but give him 2 years and pitchers seeing him 3-5 times. I used to keep a book on every hitter. Scott Rolen couldn't hit my sinker down and in at all.

Every category? Don't count Frenchy out just yet, he had a good year in 2011: .285 AVG, 22 stolen bases, 20 HRs, 87 RBIs, Career at .270 avg and 121 HR, and he has one of the best outfield arms in baseball today with close to the highest outfield assist totals in baseball in the last 6 years

I have a feeling many can't stand him. I like the hustle but don't like the show boating keep your helmet on. I saw a bunch of kids taking their helmets off this past weekend in a tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start calling outs. Anyone know if it's a rule to keep your helmet on at the youth level?

Yes. They have to have it on whenever they are on the field - even the bat boy.

Mine had the propensity to take his off (last year) if he wasn't safe at first and got chewed out several times with one umpire warning given to the coach. Kids can get ejected after the warning if they do it again...same with throwing your helmet on the ground or in the dugout.

I love the way Bryce took his helmet off as he strode into 2nd base with his first major league hit. That is what baseball is all about. "Hey world here I am, young, rich, and in your face" !!!!!!!!!!

Watch and see his character come in full bloom for all to see. I'm sure his teammates just LOVE him. or do what teammates think matter any more. That is so "Old School"
SOGAS Posted - 05/08/2012 : 08:36:39
It wa a move that backfired and I love it. Bryce plays the game wide open and I love it.
ramman999 Posted - 05/08/2012 : 07:51:23
I love the "old school" reasoning... Kid crowding the plate, kid showboating in the box, kid grandstanding in the field, ok I get it. 1st at bat in first inning, what message is being sent? Other than putting a run on base, who proceeds to steal home on you - THAT'S revenge, old school style!!
