Between Marietta, Acworth, Oregon Park, Powder Springs, Hiram, Dallas, Kennesaw, and the teams in the Canton/Woodstock area, there will be well over 20 competitive travel teams in the 10U age group for the 2011 season. I don't really forsee much of a decline in the number of teams in the years to come, and I was just wondering what it would take to start a travel baseball league similar to the Lanier League for the Cobb/Paulding area? All these teams are located within reasonable driving distances from one another, and some sort of league with a regular season would present an opportunity to get a lot more games in without a lot of extra cost or travel, especially for the fall season.
Something like this may be impossible to pull off; I really have no idea how these sorts of leagues are started or ran. But I figured that someone on here would have some experience in this area and may offer some input.

All-Tournament Players Park would be happy to sit with Stan and teams interested in a Fall NWBA League Series and season ending tournament. We can handle 8u-12u teams with our two fields.

Glad to hear that teams are living up to their commitment. We have not been on a team that played NWBA in over 3 years. Before that two of my sons played a total of three seasons on teams that played NWBA. Good to hear things have changed some. It can be a great experience and I hope they can attract more teams next spring. I don't think they had enough teams to have an 11U division.

The 13U league worked out very well. The only scheduling conflicts were taken care of weeks in advance.

We participated in the 10u league last year and did not have a single cancellation, other than weather. It was a great experience for our team and a great service to us.

Keep up the good work, Stan!

Last year when I asked who would be playing NWBA in the 9u age group I got no response. We are from Cherokee and are considering the Lanier league for 10u this year. The travel distance during the week for one game is pretty bad though. I would have to talk to our head coach but I'm sure we would be very interested in NWBA depending on how many teams there are. Could we start a list of who is interested?

We stressed the issue of last minute cancellations and it was better this year although in my book any time a team cancels with almost no notice or no-shows it is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect. This year the 10's and 12's had a playoff between divisions and the 13's had a tournament. Each age group votes on how they want to end the season. When schedules are drawn up, all teams give us the dates they are unavailable, the dates that they have field time and they have decided how many league games they want to play. If the teams provide accurate information there are no conflicts in the beginning. What happens is teams decide to play one more tournament multiple times and now they have conflicts.

Since most teams in this area now consider themselves tournament teams, we are looking at different approaches that will give teams something that will complement their tournament season.

Any ideas are welcome.

Hey Stan, the biggest problem we had with playing in the NWBA league years ago was all the cancellations for the weekend games, because one team or another decide to play a tournament. We had more than a couple of teams wait until Thursday to cancel a Saturday game (If they bothered to inform us and we did not find out until arriving at their park for a game). That gave us NO TIME to jump into a tournament and it meant we were dead for a weekend...

I think one change that might work would require "league" games to be scheduled during the week. I think the chances of cancellations are smaller. How about having 5 team divisions and play eight games in each division (play everyone twice). The winner or top two from each division plays a double elimination tournament. If the hosting site has a couple of fields and with that few of teams participating in the season ending tournament, it could possibly be completed over a few nights in one week and should not interfere with tournaments.

Based upon this post and others in the past, I wanted to respond to the forum participants that do not understand that this site represents a travel baseball league and the forums are our contribution to the baseball community as a whole. NWBA has been in existence since the late 1990's. Until a few years ago almost every team in this area participated in the league, spring and fall. There were few exceptions. There was even a Select Division where you had to have certain credentials to become a member of that division. Over the past few years most teams in this area have become tournament teams as the number of tournaments has grown exponentially. There have been other leagues start up with teams that did not want to play the Cobb, South Cherokee and North Fulton teams that played NWBA.

With that being said, NWBA is still an active league and is open to any teams. We are continually soliciting teams and individuals to get involved. Even within the tournament teams, there is a core of people that like the benefits of league play. Playing for a reward over a longer period of time and having meaningful games rather than scrimmage games. Some teams have had scheduling problems and we are looking at some changes for the coming year that will make this easier to manage.

As I have posted many times in the past, if you are interested in league play, get involved with NWBA. The framework for league play is already set up - all that has to happen is for the teams to sign up, schedule games and start playing. We set up geographically based divisions, track games online, have custom awards for the top finishers and have an end of season tournament for those age groups that decide to hold one.
