The travel season is winding down as we leap into July and approach August etc. I've seen some absolute incredible baseball but was wondering.....how many great acts of sportsmanship have we witnessed this past year ? We often utilize this board as a vent for what's negative ( in the hopes of improving the game ) so let's also use it for the positive !

Posted this one already this year but given the subject, thought it was worth posting again...

Kids get applauded all the time for their abilities on the field but I saw something today in a game that I thought was the best display of sportsmanship I have seen in a while. We (Team Ga) are playing Homeplate Chilidogs-Lawson in basically a loser go home pool game. Our #2 hitter hits a two runner homerun in the first for an early lead. While rounding second, the HP shortstop (#1) gives our hitter a high five. Now we hit several in the game and I am not sure if he did this for each of our hitters. I only caught the first one because I have it on video as the hitter was my son. BUT, the impression he made came later in the game when he took the mound. Just a few batters in to his outing, one of our players hits another home run to give us an 18-2 lead. How did he respond? He met the hitter rounding first to again give congratulations with a high five. This made an impression on the hitter and some of his teammates as they talked about it in the dugout afterwards. He could have very easily been disgusted not only because of the way the game was going but also because of the fact that he was the one that gave up the homerun but instead he showed a lot of class. Because of the rules of the board, I will not give the kids name but if anyone knows the parents of #1 on the Homeplate Chilidogs Lawson, they should be congratulated as they are doing something right with this kid. That kind of class is not something that is coached.

Good call on the blue/catcher relationship. Also shows what a great understanding of the game our kids have.

We hosted a tournament and were in the championship game of the "Silver" bracket. The game got rained out and we were the champs based on being the higher seed. We invited the opponents back 2 wks later, paid for the umps out of team funds and played it out on the field. They won and got the 1st place trophies.

Sure helps to have lots of field time. :D

We complain about "the blue" frequently, but I've observed on multiple occasions where a catcher takes a foul tip to the body.....blue immediately finds some reason like brushing off the plate or strolling to pitchers mound to hand deliver a new ball to the pitcher to allow the catchers to compose themselves and deal with their OWEE ! Very classy "blue" and thanks for keeping our kids in mind.

This year, I've also witnessed some classy catchers take a field visit to the mound after "blue" takes a foul tip as well. That just blows me away that these kids have that mutual respect for these guys. Great stuff by both "blue" and the catchers !

A 10yo boy hit a chopper down the first base, which the pitcher fielded and reached out for the batter/runner. The umpire called him safe, said he missed him. The batter/ runner told his first base coach the pitcher tagged me. I am not sure what the coach said to the 10yo but I know the 10yo called time and told the umpire that he was tagged. The umpire, perplexed, said he was standing by his call, even though he knew he missed it...........So when I got in the car I asked my son why he felt compelled to tell the umpire that he was tagged. He said " because he DID tag me". For that and many other reasons I love him.

EVERY time this season when I saw a player get seriously hurt, I saw:

both teams coaching staff's immediately rush to the injured player as if were their own.

both sides rushing to prepare an ice pack.

all the players on the field taking a knee.

...and two teams of families momentarily became one.

all of this was followed by a spirited round of applause when the injured player got up.

OK. I've got one that started very bad in terms of everything, including sportsmanship and ended up being something cool. At an 18u woodbat tournament at Auburn 2 weeks ago. Watching two teams play, waiting to play the winner. Kid strikes out on a called 3rd strike. Doesn't agree with the call and draws a line to show ump where the pitch was. Gets ejected. Coach comes out to argue and gets the boot. Ump or TD calls game and the kid who got ejected goes beserk trying to fight ump. Really a bad situation. The team starts packing their stuff and leaving and one of the kids stops everyone and says - Wait, we gotta go shake their hands. They had nothing to do with this. - The whole team turns around to go through the hand shake line with the other team. Like I said, started really ugly, but for them to go back to shake hands was pretty classy.

Not to toot my own horn, but we played at Eastern Kentucky University last weekend. My son pitched a game that was a real pitchers duel. Game tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 7th. Both starting pitchers still in. We had bases loaded and went with a bunt to get the winning run in. Bunt was back to their pitcher, who fielded it and threw it over the catcher's head allowing the winning run to score. Kid still pitched an awsome game. Next day, that team played before us. When they left, I ran that pitcher down to tell him he pitched a great game the day before and it was a shame to lose it they way they did. The kid has a verbal to go to Virginia Tech, so I congratulated him on that as well. He seemed appreciative that someone from the other team came to say something to him.

I'm sure there are more - and better stories. I'm looking forward to hearing some of them.
